The Redditch sailing club is based at the "Arrow Valley Lake" or Arrow Valley Country Park to give it its official title.

Arrow Valley Lake is a very big, man-made lake situated in Redditch, Worcestershire, UK. It is the centrepiece of the Arrow Valley Country Park, which covers an area of approximately 900 acres. The lake and surrounding parkland were developed in the 1970s as part of the new town expansion of Redditch, with the goal of providing a green space for leisure and recreational activities.

When the lake opened to the public I was about 11 or 12 years of age, and at 17 when I was still living with my parents we moved to live in Marlfield Lane a 5 minute walk from the sailing club on the lake. I walked the dogs round there hundreds of times.

Even though I moved out a couple of years later, my parents remained there for many years. Now half a century later I am back living close to the lake again, but nearer to the basketball court end, than the sailing club side.

When I was a child I used to fish for trout in the River Arrow. The lake is fed by the River Arrow, which flows through the park. The park is very popular destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a wide range of outdoor activities, including walking, jogging, cycling, and birdwatching.

There are several well-maintained footpaths and cycle routes throughout the park, offering picturesque views of the lake and the surrounding woodland areas.

The Arrow Valley Visitor Centre, located near the lake, provides information about the park, its history, and the local wildlife. It also features a café, where visitors can enjoy refreshments while taking in views of the lake. In addition to the visitor center, there are picnic areas and playgrounds for families to enjoy.

The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including various bird species, small mammals, and insects. Birdwatchers can spot species such as swans, ducks, coots, moorhens, and herons, among others. Arrow Valley Lake is also a popular spot for angling, with a variety of fish species inhabiting the lake, such as carp, bream, and tench.

The Arrow Valley Model Boat club also uses the lake for their events from time to time.

Overall Impression:

Overall, Arrow Valley Lake and the surrounding Arrow Valley Country Park provide a tranquil escape from urban life, offering a multitude of recreational opportunities for those who appreciate nature and the outdoors. The Redditch Sailing club is certainly worth checking out if you live in the area and are looking to get into sailing.

Personally I've not been a member of the club for the last 35 years as I mainly ocean sail these days.

I'm a freelance writer and avid sailor who loves to share my passion for the sea with others. I've written articles for various sailing magazines and websites, covering topics such as sailing destinations, boat maintenance, navigational tips, and marine wildlife. I went on a short sailing trip whilst on holiday as a child and was instantly hooked. I've been sailing ever since. Although I've done a fair amount of lake sailing in my time, my real passion is the ocean. I hope you enjoy reading this blog about sailing as much as I've enjoyed writing about it.
